Memorial Celebrations of Dan’s Life
Services and Activities
- Memorial services for Dan’s friends and family were held during the weekend of June 10-11 (details).
- Saturday, June 10: Quaker-style memorial service in Dan’s lily gardens at home, starting at 2:30pm and going until whenever.
- Sunday, June 11: Excursion to Neo-China in Cary for dim sum at 11:30am.
See photos and one of the slideshows. Am hoping to get the 8mm video of the actual service, and another slideshow, online eventually.
- A dedication event is being planned for a memorial lily bed and a disc golf course which will be enjoyed by Echo Hill Campers and alumni. Timing is dependent upon completion of design of the course.
- Possibilities for raising funds for lung cancer awareness and research are being explored. These include:
- holding annual memorial disc golf tournaments (RADL and other orgs)
- selling apparel and merchandise, with LCcure/DISCoverACure logos and possibly Danny’s scenic photos, from an LCcure CafePress shop and a
LCcure Zazzle shop
- I’m considering opening another CafePress or Zazzle storefront to sell prints, apparel, and gift items using Dan’s and my flower photos, as a fundraising activity for DLH Nursery. Feedback invited …
Charitable Donations
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Echo Hill Campership Fund:
- Donations to EHCF may be made online via the secure form at http://www.ehcf.org/donation.htm, with Dan’s name in the ’Designated Donation’ box. (As a shortcut, you can connect to Karen’s JustGive wishlist for EHCF donations in Dan’s memory).
- Checks, with Dan’s name in the memo field, may be mailed to Echo Hill Campership Fund, PO Box 5923, Bethesda, MD, 20824-5923.
- Buy apparel and merchandise, with Danny’s photos of Echo Hill, from the Club EHCF CafePress shop.
or to lung cancer research:
- Wear clear breatheDEEP bracelets (why clear? because lung cancer is invisible)
- Put Lung Cancer Awareness magnets from Survivors for Lung Cancer Awareness on your cars, refrigerators, and file cabinets (as of 7/31/06, SLCA merged with Lung Cancer Alliance - not sure yet of the new link for ordering magnets, but will post here as soon as i have it!)
- The next time you send flowers, do it via the Lung Cancer Alliance portal
- Donate directly to LC research organizations … I mulled whether to start a special lung cancer non-profit organization in Dan’s memory, or funnel contributions and funds raised in his name to an existing one. As part of that, I investigated various non-profits, such as LUNGevity, AICR, Lung Cancer Online Foundation (LCOF), Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation. I chose Lungevity because of their focus on *lung* cancer and because of their ability to leverage each donated dollar with matching funds. Both of the online stores (cafepress and zazzle) are set up to send 100% of sales proceeds directly to Lungevity.
